To apply for British citizenship, you must first have obtained Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), also known as permanent residence.
Once you have ILR, you may be eligible to apply for naturalisation as a British citizen, subject to meeting certain requirements:
- Age: You must be at least 18 years old at the time of application.
- Residence: You must intend to continue living in the UK.
- ‘Life in the UK’ Test: You must have passed the ‘Life in the UK’ test, which assesses your knowledge of British customs, history, and language.
- Residency: Depending on your immigration status, you must have resided in the UK for a minimum period (usually five years) and have held ILR for at least 12 months.
- Absences: You must not have been outside the UK for more than 450 days in the last five years, and no more than 90 days in the last 12 months.
- Good Immigration Status: You must have had ILR for the last 12 months.
- Compliance with Immigration Laws: You must not have breached any immigration laws while in the UK.
- Good Character: You must be of good character and sound mind, as assessed by the Home Office.
