Star Wars film company prosecuted under health and safety

Foodles Production (UK), a film production company, has been charged with breaching health and safety laws following an incident during filming, which left Hollywood actor, Harrison Ford, with a broken leg.

An incident at Pinewood Studios, which left Hollywood star, Harrison Ford, with a broken leg, has resulted in the prosecution of a film production company under health and safety legislation.

On 12 June 2014, Mr. Ford, 73, suffered a broken leg while shooting Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

He was hit by a heavy, hydraulic metal door while he was on the set of the Millennium Falcon spaceship and was airlifted to hospital where he underwent surgery on his leg.

The Hollywood actor subsequently underwent rehabilitation before returning to the film set to continue shooting his scenes as Star Wars character, Han Solo.

Representatives from Foodles Production (UK) – whose parent company is Disney – will appear in court on 12 May to face four charges: two under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, one under Regulation 3(1) of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and a further charge under Regulation 11(1) of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Foodles Production (UK) is the company responsible for the production of the film, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and, under health and safety laws, it is also the entity responsible for managing risks created during the production process.

A spokesman for the HSE said: “The HSE has…informed Foodles Production (UK) Ltd that it will be prosecuted over four alleged breaches of health and safety law.

“The charges relate to an incident during filming of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, which left Harrison Ford with serious injuries after he was hit by a heavy hydraulic door.

“By law, employers must take reasonable steps to protect workers – this is as true on a film set as a factory floor. We have investigated thoroughly and believe that we have sufficient evidence to bring the case to court.”
